Review - Filler Refinement

What will my recovery entail?

One of the things patients love about filler refinement procedures is that the recovery is immediate. Patients leave Dr. Weber’s office and can return to work and normal activities right away. Many patients actually choose to have their procedures performed during their lunch break so they do not miss work. In rare cases where swelling, bruising, or discomfort presents, it can be easily controlled using ice and over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medications.

What will my results be like?

Treatment plans are always customized to provide results that help patients reach their individual aesthetic goals. Countless patients who have experienced poor results from injectable fillers have been completely satisfied with their filler refinement procedure results.

Results are typically apparent within 24 hours. Depending on the dose of Hylenex and the number of injections, existing fillers can be reduced, softened, contoured, or completely removed. Results include improvement of the following:

  • Overfilled or asymmetric areas, “duck lips” and puffy bags under the eyes
  • Lumps, bumps, or lines in any facial area
  • Bluish discoloration also known as the Tyndall effect
  • Vascular complications following injection of hyaluronic acid fillers into or around blood vessels

What can I expect from my initial consultation with Dr. Weber?

An initial consultation is the first step in the filler refinement procedure process. Consultations are carried out as follows:

Medical history review

Dr. Weber obtains important information regarding the patient’s medical history, including previous procedures and the initial filler procedure.

A physical examination

Dr. Weber examines the patient’s face to identify areas that have been negatively affected by fillers.

A discussion

Dr. Weber and the patient discuss treatment goals. The patient is invited to ask questions and state concerns so Dr. Weber can appropriately answer and address them.

Dr. Weber’s patient-focused approach allows him to create a customized treatment plan that aligns with the patient’s aesthetic goals. He uses before-and-after photos to show the patient what type of results they can expect after their procedure. The treatment decision is always left up to the patient. Should the patient decide a filler refinement procedure is right for them, a procedure is scheduled for a convenient date and time.

Filler Refinement FAQs

What fillers can and cannot be refined or removed with a filler refinement procedure?

Fillers that Dr. Weber can refine or remove with a filler refinement procedure include all hyaluronic acid type fillers. This includes Juvederm, Voluma, Volbella, Vollure, Restylane and Belotero.

Fillers that cannot be refined or removed are Radiesse, Sculptra, and Bellafill, as they are not hyaluronic acid-based products. For the same reason, silicone injections and fat transfer procedures also cannot be refined or removed. However, in many cases a targeted addition of filler can often salvage poorly placed injections of fillers that cannot be removed.

Is there anything I can do to improve my appearance if my filler cannot be refined or removed?

In cases where your specific filler cannot be dissolved, improvement can often be created with strategic placement of a small amount of additional filler. This will not help with overfilled areas, but may be able to smooth contours and improve the results.

Are there risks associated with a filler refinement procedure?

Like all minimally invasive procedures, filler refinement procedures have risks, but they are generally negligible. Dr. Weber explains risks and the measures he takes to reduce them to patients during initial consultations.

The biggest risk associated with a filler refinement procedure is a small bruise. The overwhelming majority of patients find that the potential results of the procedure far outweigh the risks. In some cases, multiple injections of Hylenex might be required to achieve the desired improvements.

How is Hylenex administered?

Dr. Weber administers Hylenex via injection. Very tiny “BOTOX” needles are used which are much smaller than the needles used to inject the filler. Thus, patients feel little to no pain or discomfort.

What is the Tyndall effect? Can a filler refinement procedure be used to correct it?

Fillers that are injected too superficially may cause a bluish appearance of the skin known as the Tyndall effect. The condition may be corrected using a filler refinement procedure.

Can I receive fillers after my procedure?

Patients who wish to receive filler injections after their procedure may do so. Dr. Weber will recommend injections at an appropriate time. Patients who had their initial filler procedure performed with a less experienced injector than Dr. Weber are impressed at the patient-focused approach used by Dr. Weber. They are also happy to learn that Dr. Weber’s knowledge, skill, and experience drastically decreases the chances of filler complications occurring again.

Is there anything I need to do to protect my skin after my filler refinement procedure?

Dr. Weber provides patients with specific post-procedure instructions regarding protecting the skin and maximizing results. One of the most important protective measures he recommends is applying sunscreen. Moisturizers may be used to prevent dryness and improve skin health and appearance.

Is it important that my filler refinement procedure is performed by a cosmetic authority?

It is very important for patients to have their filler refinement procedures performed by a cosmetic veteran. A board-certified Facial Plastic Surgeon is the most qualified authority to perform filler refinement procedures. Their understanding of fillers, filler refinement and facial aesthetics is unprecedented.

Is Dr. Weber board-certified?

Dr. Weber is a double board-certified Facial Plastic Surgeon. His practice focus is on facial fillers, facial filler refinement, and facial rejuvenation surgery. He is a nationally renowned dermal filler leader.

How do I determine if I am a candidate for a filler refinement procedure?

Patients who have filler complications or are simply unhappy with their results may schedule an initial consultation with Dr. Weber to determine if they are candidates for a filler refinement procedure. Patients who received fillers that cannot be refined or removed are still encouraged to schedule an initial consultation as alternative treatment options may be used to improve the appearance.

What should I bring to my initial consultation?

You should bring a list of the medications and herbal supplements you take and are allergic too. You should also bring a list of questions and concerns. If you would like to bring pictures for Dr. Weber to review, you may do so.
