If you have dark circles under your eyes, you’ve probably tried a number of remedies to get rid of them. At Weber Facial Plastic Surgery, we provide a range of treatments, both surgical and minimally invasive, to refresh and renew the area below your eyes. Let’s take a further look at how these treatments work and why.
What causes dark circles?
Dark circles or “bags” under the lower eyelids appear due to a number of reasons, including allergies, skin disorders, and volume loss and thinning skin between the lower eyelid and cheek area caused by the natural aging process. Dark circles and under eye “bags” can be treated with a variety of procedures depending on your aesthetic goals and the severity of the condition.
What treatments are available for lower eyelid “bags”?
To remove undereye bags, blepharoplasty–eyelid surgery–is performed. A fat transfer can also be done as a part of this procedure to replace lost volume in the tear trough area between the lower eyelid and cheek area. During a blepharoplasty for the lower eyelid, a small incision is completely hidden behind the eyelid. Excess fat tissue is removed or reposition and, in the case of fat transfer, carefully added to fill the hollow spaces. If there is excess skin of the lower eyelid, this can be removed surgically or treated with a chemical peel or LASER resurfacing.
For those not ready for surgery, lower eyelid bags can be camouflaged with dermal filler injections. Specific fillers designed for the delicate undereye tissue are used with a precise technique to create a smooth transition between the eyelid and the cheek, which reduces the appearance of bags or darkened depressions below the eyes.
What can be done for dark pigmentation of the lower eyelid skin?
Aside from fillers, topical products containing Retin-A and Arbutin can be highly effective. Our proprietary Brighten cream, which refines and lightens the skin under the eyes is particularly effective. Chemical peels are also an effective treatment for improving the appearance of the darker pigment under the eyes and providing a brightening, strengthening effect to the skin.
How can thin skin under the eyes be treated?
We provide both dermal fillers and chemical peels to help strengthen and thicken the skin under the eyes. In addition to their many other benefits, both of these minimally-invasive treatments promote collagen growth, the body’s building block to create firmer skin and provide a stronger underlying structure.
