Microneedling is a popular and effective non-surgical cosmetic option for patients wishing to restore youthful vibrancy and vitality to their skin. But how effective is it and how soon will you see its results?
The technology of microneedling
Let’s look first at the technology of microneedling. With age comes a natural decline in the amount of collagen and elastin in our skin, which leads to fine lines and wrinkles and a loss of healthy facial volume and skin tightness. Microneedling is a non-invasive procedure that uses a number of very thin sterile needles to make tiny controlled punctures in your skin. During the procedure, a pen-like device is gently rolled over target areas to create punctures into the epidermis approximately 2mm deep. These punctures trigger your skin’s natural healing process and initiate collagen production and cell regeneration. This in turn has the added cosmetic benefit of tighter skin, fewer wrinkles, and a healthier and more vibrant overall complexion.
The goal of microneedling
The goal of microneedling is to address skin-related problems including fine lines, wrinkles, acne marks, scars, discoloration, pigmented spots, sagging skin and stretch marks. Microneedling also smooths your skin’s texture, helping a patient achieve a more youthful appearance.
What is the patient’s experience like during the procedure?
The office visit for microneedling requires approximately 45 minutes, though the microneedling itself occupies about 30-minutes of that time. A topical anesthetic will be applied to your skin before treatment. During the procedure itself, the microneedling device is carefully run over your skin. You’ll feel a warm and scratchy sensation, but little to no pain or discomfort.
What is the downtime required with microneedling?
The microneedling procedure doesn’t lead to any downtime and you can resume most of your daily activities immediately. You’ll notice a mild pinkness in the facial skin the day after treatment. Dr. Weber may apply saline pads or a gel mask over your skin to reduce inflammation and redness, and he may also prescribe topical ointments to aid in healing.
How soon will I see the results of microneedling?
You will see the initial results of microneedling within 2-3 weeks, however, because microneedling boosts a natural process of collagen and elastin production, the best results will be evident after that production cycle has completed which can require up to three months.
